The transition from Starbucks to Buy Me A Coffee led to a refined objective-enhancing creator-supporter engagement on the platform. This shift was driven by the need to address specific user challenges highlighted during preliminary research, guiding the development of a Supporter Engagement Suite and an AI-driven feature set.
Research Insights
My research approach included competitor analysis, user interviews, and affinity mapping, each offering unique insights into how to enhance Buy Me A Coffee's platform:
Competitor Analysis:
Revealed that Buy Me A Coffee stands out for its simplicity and low fees but falls short in features compared to competitors like Patreon and Ko-fi.
Unique Positioning: Buy Me A Coffee is tailored to facilitate direct financial interactions between creators and their supporters, focusing on building personal connections within their community.
Strengths and Weaknesses: The platform's strengths include ease of use and lower transaction fees, appealing to users who value straightforward interactions. However, it is limited by a lack of features such as detailed analytics and extensive customization that are available on more established platforms like Patreon.
Feature Gap: While Buy Me A Coffee offers basic community engagement tools, it lacks comprehensive features like forums, in-depth analytics, and advanced customization, which restricts deeper user engagement compared to platforms that offer elaborate tools for community building and detailed performance tracking.
User Interviews:
Uncovered a clear desire among creators for deeper engagement mechanisms beyond financial transactions.
Creator Needs: Interviews with users like Regina and Camille highlighted the need for features that allow them to weave their supporters more personally into their creative processes.
Engagement Tools: Users expressed a need for better tools to engage with their community, suggesting features such as live interactions, enhanced messaging capabilities, and more personalized content delivery systems.
Affinity Mapping:
Helped synthesize the wide array of feedback from user interviews into coherent themes and actionable insights.
Desired Features: Affinity mapping identified a strong preference among creators for enhanced communication tools, personalized interaction capabilities, and greater control over how they engage with their audiences.
Community Building: There was a consistent call for features that support not just content sharing but actual community building within the platform, enabling creators to foster a sense of belonging and loyalty among their supporters.

User Persona
In my research on the Buy Me A Coffee platform, I identified a need for deeper user engagement and personal interaction. This insight led to creating my persona, Regina, a tattoo artist who seeks to connect more intimately with her audience. Regina's challenges with the platform's limited engagement tools shaped my focus on developing features that enhance interaction and provide creators with actionable insights, ensuring our design decisions directly address user needs and pain points.
Prioritization
I started this project with the goal of adding a simple feature to the Starbucks app but shifted to enhancing Buy Me A Coffee (BMC) when I discovered the platform's challenges with user engagement. I realized that BMC needed better tools for creators to keep their audiences engaged over the long term, as the existing tools for interaction and analytics were limited.
The shift in focus was guided by a clear Point of View (POV) and "How Might We" questions, which helped me zero in on creating features that provided creators with actionable insights and personalized ways to engage their supporters. This led to the development of an advanced analytics dashboard and AI-driven content coaching tools, prioritized to meet immediate user needs and offer tangible benefits from the start. This focus ensured that the solutions were practical and truly enhanced user engagement, laying a solid foundation for adding more features later.
POV
As a creator-focused platform, I need to empower artists with intuitive tools for engagement and detailed analytics to understand and captivate their audience, ensuring their creative work remains a constant draw for supporters.
